Office of Opportunities for New Americans

Report: Office of Opportunities for New Americans

Ohio has a rich history of welcoming immigrants from all parts of the world. They are an integral part of Ohio’s economic success

and key to our industrial and commercial strength. Ohio was the United States’ first frontier, and cities across the state have been

shaped by the hard work and ingenuity of diverse immigrant groups that settled here. Today, new immigrants are finding a home in

Ohio and making contributions to the cities that were enriched by earlier generations.

Last year, I had the pleasure and opportunity to assist in what I think is one of the most significant steps taken by the State of Ohio to assist Immigrants to realize their dreams faster, and in a more efficient way.

Governor Kasich dispatched his team to crawl the State of Ohio in search of Immigrant communities. Their task...? listen to them. Ask for feedback. What could have made their lives better when they came to Ohio? How can the State improve to make sure they are speedily integrated into business, community, and education? What obstacles are they facing? How can these obstacles be removed? How did they overcome obstacles? What drives them?

I heard some amazing stories, some which made it to the final report below. There are many obstacles still, but it is refreshing to know that the State of Ohio seeks to go beyond reports and ensure an equitable Ohio for all.
